The product was ordered on the 1st November. Today is the 19th December and the product t has not arrived. Despite contacting customer service and the apparent courier no one will get back to me to let me know where the order is and I simply have to negotiate with AI without actually having any one deal with the issue. Won’t be recommending at this point.
This pencil is built like a tank. It is hefty, but adequately balanced.
Overall very viable product, don't let my review detract you from buying if you want it.
There's 2 stages to pressing the pencil button. First half's very light in pressure and is mostly just for fidgeting; the heavier second half is to engage the mechanical pencil. The first half feels hollow and wobbly when pressed from up top, and sounds a bit scratchy when playing with it. Makes sense as it's just a small spring filling the empty space. There's not much movement left for the 2nd half, so you kinda have to press pretty deep to begin engaging the (extremely stiff) mechanism. Then, there's a bit of room left for pushing out the pencil lead. There's no clear "click" sound either. This differs a lot from many mechanical pencils where you can push out lead early in the press, stop where you need to and can hear an audible "click" to know roughly when the mechanism has engaged enough.
Range of motion for the pencil's bolt is also much shorter than the pen's.
Compare this to the pen, which has a very long range to push down on, has a latch to further extend the motion, and a more smooth, uniform feel from latching to release.
As a result, both the fidget half and the mechanical pencil half feel poor at their own thing.
The pencil tip doesn't retract like many mechanical pencils I've used, so be aware of that too.
Functionally, it's perfectly fine.
Compared to other Scribedrivers I have:
- Mechanical pencil at the time I ordered has no wobble. The OG pen I have has a little. The pencil system is directly fastened into the steel body, so that probably plays a big role. I don't have a new Scribedriver pen from this batch so I cannot compare, though a blog post mentioned the pen's opening has been tightened up for stability, so maybe new pens are better than mine.
- Shirt clip appears to have smoother edges than the OG pen's. The clip on the OG pen is sharp and digs into my hand, so I removed it. The new clip feels much more comfortable and I'm ok leaving it on.
- The black/brass pencil version's screws for the shirt clip may be slightly longer than the silver/steel pencil version's screws. As a result, if I remove the pen clip and tighten the brass screws direct onto the pen body, the friction will fix the button in place and prevent it from moving. Brass screws on silver pencil also has this issue, and silver screws on black/brass pencil do not have the issue.
The OG pen's screws are waaaaaaay longer than what's used for both pencils and will not screw in fully into the pencils, though the threading is compatible.
- This is well within placebo territory: knurling on the new black/brass and silver/steel Scribedrivers seem a tad more aggressive than the OG Scribedrivers I have. I always felt the OG was a bit too slippery so I'm happy for the extra grip. However it's so subtle, I cannot tell if it's placebo, if mine got smoother with time, or if it's just manufacturing variance. Would still like it to be way more aggressive though.
- Twisting open the two halves of the new Scribedriver pencils feel smoother than the OG pen. Blog mentioned o-rings are lubricated now, so that may contribute to this.
Seems to be a solid, long lasting product. Materials are strong and design is mechanically simple. The replaceable aftermarket mechanical pencil system is the only complex part. Twisting the two halves of the pencil will expose the system, which itself is fastened into the pen's body via its own threads. Twisting it like a screw will release it. Overall, repairability is easy.
Just be aware:
- There's a spring inside the pen. Be careful when opening.
- There's an o-ring where the two halves connect. Open it slowly and smoothly as it's thin. At the time of writing, the dimensions for the o-ring are only found on the pen's product page under the "Size Guide" section. LTT should add it to the pencil's page as well.
- The silver/steel pencil system twisted off easily by hand when I disassembled it.Not so on my black/brass version. I had to wrap the latter with a rubber band for grip, then twist it off with a plier for extra leverage. Not much force was needed, so don't overdo the clamp pressure if mimicking. The black/brass version also has more friction when opening/closing the two halves. Dunno if these tight threads are due to manufacturer's tolerance, or if they are due to the black coating.
For the screws holding in the shirt clip, I used a T5.5 torx bit to unscrew them as I didn't have a hex screw of the right size, and it worked fine. T5 and T6 didn't work. Screws have blue Loctite on them so they won't easily come off on their own.
Didn't disassemble the rest of the pencil but if it's like the OG Scribedriver, the LTT bolt can be twisted and unscrewed to take everything else apart. Wrapping the side of the bolt head (the part with the LTT logo) with a rubber band, then twist it open with a plier worked for me. Again, don't overdo it, just keep applying pressure until it's loose.
Great pen
No eraser isnt the best but i like how it writes
